Mike Vrabel taking an indefinite break from the Patriots to pursue counseling during the Dianna Russini situation

Patriots just one victory away from returning to the Super Bowl following impressive comeback

Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots, is stepping away from the team for an indefinite period to seek counseling and focus on family matters. This decision follows some controversy regarding his relationship with former NFL reporter Dianna Russini. Vrabel’s absence means he will miss a portion of the NFL Draft, which is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, including all of Saturday when rounds 4 through 7 will take place. The Patriots currently have eight picks, notably two in the fourth round.

Elliott Wolfe, the team’s executive vice president of player personnel, will take charge of the draft in Vrabel’s absence, supported by Ryan Cowden, the vice president of player personnel. Even with the possibility of communicating remotely, the Patriots are expected to navigate the draft differently than they would with Vrabel present.

In a statement, Vrabel expressed his commitment to his family and the team, mentioning that he has pledged to be the best version of himself. He believes seeking counseling is essential for him to become a better husband, father, and coach. “I’m grateful for the support I’ve received and believe this will make me a stronger person,” he stated.

His absence comes at a critical time, as the Patriots have just started their offseason program. It seems evident that, despite the positive intent behind Vrabel’s decision, the timing points to urgent issues that need addressing right away.

Vrabel plans to spend time out of Massachusetts with his wife, Jennifer, and their two sons. The couple, who have been married since 1999, celebrated their 25th anniversary with a trip to Italy in 2024.

This month has been particularly challenging for Vrabel. Just days after returning from the NFL’s annual meeting, he was approached by a media outlet about an incident involving a photo of him and Russini, who was then working for The Athletic. The two were reportedly seen together at a resort in Sedona, Arizona, engaging in affectionate behavior.

Despite both denying any wrongdoing—Vrabel called the notion “laughable”—the situation escalated, leading to an internal investigation that resulted in Russini’s resignation. He was then confronted about this trip with family, the owner, and team players.

On Tuesday, Vrabel spoke to reporters, addressing the situation for the first time but refraining from providing specifics regarding his relationship with Russini. He acknowledged the difficulty in having conversations with those closest to him. The process of addressing these issues seems far from over.
