Patriots’ Recent Victory and Coach Mike Vrabel’s Outlook
Mike Vrabel’s squad, the Patriots, achieved a narrow victory over the Falcons on Sunday, bringing their record to 7-2 and marking their sixth consecutive win.
Upcoming games against the struggling Jets (1-7), Bengals (3-6), and Giants (2-7) have led the first-year head coach to express his views on “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday. He made it clear that he’s not one to get caught up in discussions about the strength of their schedule.
Vrabel responded to a prompt from WEEI’s Chris Curtis, addressing the external conversations surrounding their record: “Do you want me to talk about the schedule, or should I focus on what the team needs? You’re spending a lot of effort on this. Is it a national take or just yours?”
The host mentioned that, although the Patriots’ 7-2 record has gained attention nationally, there’s skepticism about the quality of their schedule. Curtis then asked how Vrabel keeps the team grounded amidst these discussions.
Vrabel didn’t hold back. He remarked, “I enjoy the little laugh you have there. It’s puzzling to me… In the NFL, we have the strength of schedule and a salary cap that ensures every team spends the same. So, I think in this league, it’s not a significant metric.”
New England’s performance this season has certainly exceeded expectations, especially after a disappointing 4-13 record under coach Jerod Mayo last year. They surprised many by defeating the Bills 23-20 in Week 5 and then going on to win four more games.
The coach, who has three Super Bowl wins under his belt with the Patriots, assured Curtis that his message remains consistent week to week, while also acknowledging the host’s reactions.
Vrabel emphasized, “I can only coach one team at a time. I don’t set schedules. Any team can beat another on any given day.” He also highlighted the recent game against the Falcons, noting their early lead followed by a tense moment where they had to regroup after a close score.
“That illustrates how quickly a game can shift,” Vrabel noted, reflecting on how they nearly let the game slip away after feeling comfortable with their performance.
Next up, the Patriots will face the Buccaneers, a team coming off a bye week and currently at 6-2, which means they’ll need to be on their toes.
