A recent photo from a Donald Trump Cabinet meeting has sparked interest, particularly because it shows top officials using a secure version of the Signal messaging app. This comes after a scandal where former national security adviser Mike Waltz mistakenly added journalists to a sensitive chat about military operations concerning Yemen.
In these newly surfaced images, Waltz can be seen using the TM SGNL app, which retains and archives messages, raising some eyebrows. This development follows last month’s incident where Waltz’s inclusion of the press in a secure discussion raised serious concerns. The TM SGNL app, created by Telemessage, imitates popular messaging platforms but adds archiving features that could potentially compromise the strong encryption that typically makes Signal a trusted choice for private discussions. White House officials might be opting for this modified app to meet legal obligations regarding the preservation of the president’s records.
The photos reveal Waltz communicating with notable figures, including Tarsi Gabbard, the Vice President of National Intelligence Marco Rubio, and Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. One message confirmed a meeting time, while another indicated a call to Gabbard about an 8 a.m. session concerning the President’s Daily Brief (PDB).
In light of the ongoing concerns, a representative from the White House defended the use of the Signal app, emphasizing that it is an approved application for government personnel. Following these events, Trump decided to replace Waltz as national security advisor with Rubio, while appointing Waltz as the UN ambassador.
