Mike Zimmer's emotional last conversation with Marshawn Kneeland uncovered

Tragic News Surrounds Cowboys Defensive End Marshawn Kneeland

In a poignant exchange prior to the heartbreaking news about Marshawn Kneeland, Mike Zimmer reached out to the young defensive end. Kneeland, who played for the Cowboys, died by suicide at just 24 years old.

According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, Zimmer, the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator during Kneeland’s rookie year in 2024, encouraged him to “keep being himself” in their last conversation. He described Kneeland as a dedicated player, eager to improve and not one to back down on the field. Zimmer expressed that his closing advice was to remain true to himself for a promising career ahead.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that Kneeland lost his life due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound while being pursued by police. A trooper had tried to pull over his vehicle for a traffic violation, but Kneeland allegedly fled, leading to a chase.

Additionally, leaked information from a police dispatcher indicated concerns about Kneeland’s mental health. Reports mention that a loved one had warned that he might be in a desperate state, saying, “He’s going to end it all.” It was also noted that Kneeland sent farewell messages to family and friends.

Authorities initially lost track of his vehicle but eventually located it, which was subsequently involved in an accident. Police had received prior information about Kneeland’s struggles with suicidal thoughts before finding him deceased early Thursday morning.

The Cowboys confirmed Kneeland’s untimely death, just days after he made headlines by scoring a touchdown on a blocked punt during a game against the Cardinals.

The organization shared its deep sorrow at the loss of a cherished teammate, extending thoughts and prayers to Kneeland’s girlfriend and his family.

Reactions from NFL peers poured in following the tragic news. Micah Parsons, a former Packers star, expressed his grief on Instagram, saying, “I’m sorry, little brother. I hope you find peace.” Meanwhile, teammate Juannie Thomas shared his own pain on social media, stating, “My stomach hurts, bro.”
