New Jersey Gubernatorial Election Results
Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic candidate, has won the New Jersey gubernatorial race against Republican Jack Ciatarelli. The Associated Press confirmed the election results at 9:23 p.m., with Sherrill securing 56.9% of the votes compared to Ciatarelli’s 42.5%.
“New Jersey, it has been the honor of my life to earn your trust and serve as the 57th governor of this great state,” Sherrill expressed. In a post on X, she stated, “I promise to listen, to lead with courage, and to never forget those I serve.”
Sherrill and Ciatarelli were both candidates to replace the current governor, Phil Murphy, who is unable to run again due to term limits.
Polling before the election indicated a neck-and-neck race. An Atlas Intel poll conducted from October 25 to 30 showed Sherrill leading slightly with 50.2% to Ciatarelli’s 49.3% among 1,639 likely voters.
Another poll by Emerson College, conducted on September 22-23 among 935 potential voters, revealed a tie at 43% support for both candidates, with 11% undecided.
Sherrill’s recent success followed a report from Politico indicating that by October 3, she had raised approximately $17.5 million, compared to Ciatarelli’s $16.5 million. Although Ciatarelli raised more from in-state donors, Sherrill was noted to have a larger overall fundraising total.
The Electoral Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) disclosed that Sherrill had $6.5 million in available funds, whereas Ciatarelli had $4 million reportedly saved up.
Former President Barack Obama campaigned for Sherrill last weekend and shared concerns about the current political climate, noting it being quite troubling. Rising energy costs featured prominently in the candidates’ discussions, with Sherrill pledging to “freeze energy rates for one year,” according to reports.
This situation resonates with voters, many of whom supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and Kamala Harris in 2024, reflecting ongoing concerns around energy prices and state governance.
