Miley Cyrus recently opened up about the impact of online bullying during an episode of Monica Lewinsky’s podcast, “Rebirth with Monica Lewinsky.” Cyrus discussed how body shaming memes from her early career still affect her today.
“A couple of memes in 2013 focused on my body, and they depicted my head in a rather unflattering way,” she shared. “Even today, whenever I put on a swimsuit, those images come to mind.” The 32-year-old singer and former star of “Hannah Montana” described her current choice of swimwear as quite modest, adding, “You wouldn’t even think about it.”
She reminisced about a recent trip to the beach with her sister, Brandi, and friends. “Everyone else was in thong bikinis, and here I was in shorts,” Cyrus said, laughing. To which Lewinsky quipped, “You’re getting your revenge!”
Brandi commented on Miley’s swimwear, saying, “You’re you. This is cool. You’re making it trendy, even if it’s something Grandma might wear to the beach.”
Despite her modest choice, Cyrus still feels uneasy about the old memes. “I really felt that. It’s odd how people believe that behind the screen, they can detach from the reality that they’re commenting on a real person,” she told Lewinsky.
However, that discomfort doesn’t keep her from expressing herself. Recently, Cyrus was seen in New York wearing a totally sheer black dress while promoting her new album, “Ponsey Beautiful.” She’s unapologetically herself, with a style that continues to push boundaries.
