U.S. Military Strike Kills Al-Qaida-Linked Leader in Syria

On Saturday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that a leader affiliated with al-Qaida, connected to the ISIS militants responsible for the deaths of two U.S. service members and an American interpreter on December 13, was killed in a military operation in northwestern Syria the previous day.

CENTCOM officials identified the individual, Bilal Hassan al-Jassim, as a seasoned terrorist leader. He had reportedly orchestrated the attack and maintained “direct ties” with the ISIS gunman involved in the killings of an American and a Syrian soldier in Palmyra last month.

“The elimination of terrorist operatives linked to the deaths of three Americans underscores our determination to pursue those who target our forces,” stated Gen. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM’s commander. “There is no safe haven for individuals who facilitate, plan, or incite assaults against American citizens or military personnel. We will locate you,” he added.

The military commenced a significant campaign in Syria following the December 13 incident.

Ongoing Military Operations Against ISIS

Through Operation Hawkeye Strike, U.S. and allied forces targeted over 100 ISIS infrastructure and weapon facilities using more than 200 precision munitions. CENTCOM has reported that in the past year, more than 300 ISIS operatives have been captured and over 20 killed across Syria.

Diplomatic Efforts Amidst the Conflict

U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, convened with Syrian President Ahmed al-Shallah, Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani, and their teams on January 10. They discussed the evolving situation in Aleppo and the broader context of Syria’s transition.

In a statement posted on social media, Barrack mentioned that President Trump has consented to lift certain sanctions to provide Syria with a chance to progress. He expressed U.S. support for the Syrian government under President al-Shallah as it seeks stability and rebuilds critical institutions.

Calls for Restraint and Dialogue

Barrack also highlighted concerns regarding developments in Aleppo, which could undermine the 2025 integration agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). He urged all involved parties to maintain restraint, halt hostilities, and return to dialogue based on previous agreements to prevent a resurgence of violence that could destabilize the region further.

The overall aspiration, as noted by Barrack, remains to achieve a stable, unified Syria that promotes equality and opportunities for all its citizens while maintaining peace with neighboring nations.
