Madagascar’s Parliament Impeaches President Amid Military Coup

Recent developments in Madagascar have led to the parliament’s decision to impeach President Andriy Rajoelina, who has sought refuge abroad following a military coup. This significant political shift in the large island nation off the coast of Africa has been marked by a swift response from military leaders.

After the impeachment vote, which Rajoelina appears to have fled to escape, Colonel Michael Landrianilina, head of Madagascar’s elite military force known as CAPSAT, announced plans to create a council comprising military, police, and gendarmerie personnel. They intend to appoint a prime minister who will, in his words, “quickly” set up a civilian government.

Colonel Landrianilina was quoted, stating, “We are in power,” emphasizing the suspension of the constitution and the role of the High Constitutional Court. He mentioned a referendum would take place within the next two years, but didn’t go into further detail.

In response, the president’s office condemned the military’s actions, branding them an “illegal declaration” and a profound “violation of the rule of law.” They asserted that “the Republic of Madagascar cannot be held hostage by force,” emphasizing resilience.

In a last-ditch attempt to counter the impeachment, Rajoelina issued a decree aiming to dissolve the lower house of parliament. This move, however, was reportedly ignored by lawmakers, according to sources.

The political landscape in Madagascar remains quite turbulent. Events are unfolding rapidly, and many are left wondering how this power struggle will shape the country’s future.
