The U.S. Armed Forces Gear Up for the 126th Army-Navy Game
Buckle up! The U.S. Army and Navy are fully prepped for the much-anticipated 126th Army-Navy Game.
Over the last ten years, both teams have showcased unique uniforms in this NCAA football rivalry, but this year, they’ve really outdone themselves.
Last week, Army revealed its special uniforms for the Dec. 13 match at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, designed to commemorate “250 years of service and sacrifice.”
Central to the design is the army’s core ethos: “I will always put the mission first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit, and I will never abandon my fallen comrades.”
The team has also drawn inspiration from the U.S. Constitution and the Revolutionary War, with “1775” inscribed on the back of their helmets.
The Army highlighted George Washington’s transformation of the Continental Army into a disciplined fighting machine. They recalled how Washington and his troops famously crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day in 1776 to reclaim control and ultimately capture Trenton and Princeton.
Washington’s soldiers were not just brave; they were trained and disciplined fighters who stood their ground against the British forces, ultimately playing a crucial role in securing American independence.
Honoring America’s founding documents, the uniform features Constitution-style lettering on the nameplate, showcasing the significance of an Army that pledges allegiance to ideals rather than to a monarchy.
Additionally, the uniform incorporates the Great Chain, acknowledging West Point’s strategic role during the Revolution, and includes purple stripes on the jersey and helmet to represent the sacrifices of soldiers and Gold Star families.
With a strong commitment to victory, the Army reaffirmed its motto, “This Is Ours,” emphasizing their resolve to protect freedom.
“We’re bringing the Army’s warrior spirit to Baltimore to vanquish our rivals and seize the Commander in Chief trophy,” the team proclaimed.
On the other side, Navy also unveiled its striking uniform, focusing on historic ships, particularly the USS Constitution, which was a significant part of this year’s design.
The Constitution has been recognized by the Navy and features prominently in their uniform’s aesthetic. Elements include a ship’s knot around the sleeves, the American flag, and the navy and traditional red hues representing the ship’s storied past.
The USS Constitution is the last surviving frigate from the original fleet and holds the title of the world’s oldest commissioned warship still in service. It was famously dubbed “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812 when cannonballs appeared to bounce off its hull, and it remains undefeated in battle.
The Navy’s uniform also highlights the use of copper, which is vital for preserving original frigates. The helmets are coated with copper oxide and adorned with sketches of historic ships, plus a wooden plank down the center, bound by six ropes, symbolizing the initial fleet of frigates.
In a nice touch, the helmet contains 126 knots, a nod to this year’s Army-Navy Game.
The Army’s uniform reveal was well-received online, even eliciting praise from rival fans. One user, a Navy veteran, expressed enthusiastic support for their jersey number, while another fan stated, “I hate the military, but this design is clean.”
Navy’s X page was awash with complimentary comments, with one suggesting that the designers “knocked it out of the park” and another stating that “there’s incredible storytelling in this design.”
According to official reports, the 2024 Army-Navy game caught the attention of an average of 9.4 million viewers on CBS, breaking the previous record set in 1992.
