Military Leader Announces Success, Commends 'Brave Generation' That Battled in Conflict

Victory Speech by IDF Chief of Staff

On Sunday, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir delivered a victory speech as his forces withdrew to the ceasefire line in Gaza, readying to escort freed hostages back to Israel.

In his remarks, translated from Hebrew by the IDF, Zamir addressed bereaved families, acknowledging the physical and mental harm faced by IDF members and their families. He expressed solidarity with citizens of Israel, announcing the start of a “repatriation operation” to recover hostages from Hamas. He emphasized the joy of reuniting with loved ones while also mourning those lost, particularly the heroic soldiers who died in battle.

The IDF completed its redeployment in readiness, prepared to respond to any threats. Zamir reflected on the events of October 7, which left a lasting impression on Israeli soldiers and commanders. He stated that the IDF would continuously implement the lessons learned from that day, ensuring its mission to protect Israeli civilians. A new generation, he noted, arose from that suffering—transforming a day of despair into a pivotal moment. The military and diplomatic actions taken over the past two years, according to him, represent a victory against Hamas, with ongoing efforts to establish a secure reality in Gaza that no longer threatens Israel.

With the return of hostages, Zamir highlighted a significant objective of the conflict—fulfilling national, moral, and Jewish commitments. He recognized Israel’s battles on multiple fronts and discussed reshaping their broader security strategy for the future. While challenges remain, he assured vigilance in their efforts for survival and safety, stressing that the safety of troops and hostages was paramount throughout the war. He also shared his emotional response to meeting with hostage families.

The IDF operated with a focus on organization and responsibility, making difficult decisions to safeguard hostages while minimizing military casualties. Zamir praised the determination he witnessed among his troops, highlighting their unwavering commitment to bring hostages home. He underscored the importance of camaraderie forged during difficult times and called for a celebration of national unity amid the return of hostages, urging a strengthening of values within both the army and Israeli society.

He took a moment to honor the 915 IDF soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict, acknowledging the profound grief their loved ones endure. Zamir expressed that the impact of their sacrifice is felt across the nation, promising ongoing support for those affected.

To his commanders, Zamir offered a salute, recognizing them as a generation of war heroes, and acknowledged the dedication of their families. He expressed pride in leading the IDF as both a soldier and commander in active duty and reserve, emphasizing a commitment to work quietly yet effectively.

Zamir, who took command during the war, previously urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a more negotiated approach but ultimately complied with the decisions of the political leadership, executing their directives, regardless of his personal views.
