Military plane crashes into San Diego Bay near naval air station

A naval electronic warfare aircraft crashed into San Diego Bay near the Naval Air Station on the North Island on Wednesday, sending two service members to the hospital.

The Navy confirmed that there were two pilots on the Boeing EA-18G Growler, and that both had been rescued.

The crash was reported near Shelter Island just after 10:16am local time, according to the San Diego Fire Department.

The San Diego office of the Coast Guard confirmed with Fox News that the pilot was rescued by a fishing boat. It was then transported to CBP Air and Marine Operations.

The Coast Guard said both pilots were taken to local hospitals and are in stable condition.

Navy officials told Fox News Digital it was unclear whether distress signals had been sent prior to the crash, and the pilot has not yet been identified.

The fire department sent 60 staff members to the scene, including two fire trucks, a foam truck, five engines, a helicopter, two boats and a lifeguard river team.
