Buckingham Palace on Saturday unveiled a new portrait of King Charles III in military uniform to mark Britain’s Armed Forces Day.

“His Majesty is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The photograph shows His Majesty dressed in the ceremonial frock coat of Field Marshal No. 1, complete with medals, swords and decorations,” the palace said in a social media post, sharing a photo of the monarch.

The portrait was taken at Windsor Castle in November 2023 by royal photographer Hugo Burnand. Burnand was also the official photographer for Prince Charles’ coronation in May 2023 and his wedding to Camilla Parker in 2005.

“I want to thank all of you who have served to defend our country,” the queen said in her two-minute message. Referring to her visit last month to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, Camilla said, “80 years on, I know that that same spirit and quality remains strong throughout our armed forces.”

She also thanked military families who “keep the home fires burning,” adding, “As the proud daughter of an Army officer, I know something about the impact military life has on loved ones. You guys are heroes, too.”

She concluded by saying that military personnel are “a source of inspiration, comfort and pride and I salute you all.”

The king, who has been battling cancer alongside his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton, returned to royal duties last month and recently attended the monarch’s official birthday celebrations, the Military Standard Ceremony, and this week hosted the emperor and empress of Japan as a state guest.

Military service is a tradition in the royal family, and Prince Charles served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy while he was Prince of Wales in the 1970s.

The painting, Prince Charles’ first official portrait, was unveiled by the palace last month but has divided fans over its avant-garde look.

The portrait was vandalised by animal rights activists at London’s Philip Mould Gallery earlier this month, but the gallery said the painting had been protected by plastic sheeting and was undamaged.
