Minecraft Education’s New DLC Focuses on Civil Rights
Minecraft has introduced a free downloadable world titled “America in the Age of Racism,” which immerses players in historical events related to racism. This includes meeting iconic figures like Rosa Parks and participating in the Greensboro sit-ins.
The DLC, named “Lessons in Good Trouble,” is designed as an educational journey centered on significant civil rights movements, both in the U.S. and internationally. You can find it at no cost on the Minecraft Marketplace, which is pretty neat.
According to the Minecraft Education Blog, players will experience pivotal moments from the segregation era in the 1960s. They’ll have the chance to interact with influential figures, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and activists from the Greensboro Lunch Counter Sit-in, and visit significant locations like the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.
The Marketplace description promotes this as a “powerful educational experience,” inviting players to “march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge with John Lewis,” support girls’ education alongside Malala Yousafzai, and take part in Nelson Mandela’s fight against apartheid— all in Minecraft’s distinctive blocky style.
Minecraft Education mentions that players start with a “peaceful Black Lives Matter protest” and conclude at “Black Lives Matter Plaza.” This DLC was developed with guidance from Teaching Tolerance, which is connected to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Notably, upon its launch in 2020, Mojang contributed to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Recently, the experience was updated with “new and improved learning materials” after reaching over 10 million downloads. It’s aimed at students between the ages of 8 to 14 and is available for free to Bedrock players via the Minecraft Marketplace.
