Mining Salt from Bureaucratic Frustrations

Mining Salt from Bureaucratic Frustrations

Here’s the latest edition of State of the Day, a morning newsletter.

I hope you’re doing well today.

It’s Thursday, and I’ve got a craving brewing.

What’s going to satisfy this thirst of mine?

A FLOOD OF TEARS

When it comes to unusual interests, in a world where people are fixated on bizarre internet trends, buying vials of bathwater from so-called “egirls” seems less odd than it might. So, why not jars of tears?

Though I wouldn’t, like some, consider drinking or bathing in them, I’d dry them to make salt. Seems like a unique seasoning for my Sunday steak dinner, right?

But who would actually buy into this new odd market?

Pretty much anyone who has felt the pressure of Trump’s economic actions.

Bureaucrats, professors, marketing experts, those involved with the WHO, and entire HR and diversity departments from both corporate and governmental sectors. I’d definitely pay a premium for a jar collected from ex-employees of the National Endowment for Democracy.

Delicious, right? Like bears drawn to honey.

Recently, the media reacted strongly to pictures of terminated State Department staff leaving the building, their personal items packed neatly away. It was like a somber yet celebratory farewell procession.

But let’s be clear; their applause wasn’t about the deserved results of their actions—it felt far more like sending off a beloved coach at retirement from a successful career.

A quick reality check: losing a job is a serious matter. Most people, especially outside the bureaucratic bubble, have likely faced it at some point, if not more. Anyone going through unexpected financial hardship needs some empathy.

This prompts me to offer a way to support their sadness.

Let’s recap a few things.

The State Department has grown from around 57,000 employees in 2007 to about 80,000 in 2024. Recent reports revealed that officials took three months to finalize a headcount, discovering multiple redundant HR offices, payroll setups, and even offices focused on climate change.

One foreign minister expressed frustration that the State Department’s “Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor” office was pushing organizations in his nation to form unions.

“State Department employees are being compensated to hang out in Georgetown while trying to recruit for the Foreign Service,” noted a source, “with hardly any accountability or standards.”

Members of the NED board, stacked with State Department funding, have worked globally to control American discourse. The WHO notoriously delayed deeming the Wuhan Virus contagious until it was politically convenient. Meanwhile, academics and marketers have been busy “deconstructing” many aspects of what makes America exceptional.

And HR departments, already muddled, became a haven for overly zealous activists from academia.

Do I even need to mention the DEI teams?

These folks didn’t stand up when Biden dismissed active-duty personnel for refusing the vaccine. They clapped, sure, but it felt more self-satisfied than sympathetic. They didn’t react much while businesses crumbled under extreme lockdown measures, or when churches faced hostile attacks. For years, their campaigns have sought to ruin the lives of anyone even slightly accused of “wrongthink.”

Calling their actions comeuppance feels like an understatement.

Yet even they, as misguided as they may be, deserve a measure of compassion.

I’ll kick things off at $10 a jar.
