Minn. Blue Earth River Dam Breaks, Prompts Flash Flood Warnings

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA - JUNE 3: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz waits for a press conference on June 3, 2020, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Moments earlier, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced charges against former Minneapolis Police Department officers Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao for aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. Ellison also announced that charges against former officer Derek Chauvin had been upgraded to second-degree murder. On May 25, Chauvin restrained Floyd for allegedly trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill and held him down with his knee on his neck for nine minutes. Floyd lost consciousness and died at the scene. The Rapidan Dam collapsed on Monday, with local officials warning that heavy rains were creating “dam-break conditions.”

The rains have reportedly caused severe erosion on the western side of the dam, causing water to flow around the already dilapidated structure, further compromising its stability.

Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) acknowledged this morning in a briefing on the condition of the dam before the collapse that it was already in poor condition.

Emergency services say they are investigating power outages caused by the dam burst, as well as debris in the river.
