The Rapidan Dam collapsed on Monday, with local officials warning that heavy rains were creating “dam-break conditions.”
The rains have reportedly caused severe erosion on the western side of the dam, causing water to flow around the already dilapidated structure, further compromising its stability.
Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) acknowledged this morning in a briefing on the condition of the dam before the collapse that it was already in poor condition.
Emergency services say they are investigating power outages caused by the dam burst, as well as debris in the river.
