Tragic Shooting in Minneapolis
Recently, Robin Westman, a transgender individual, shot and killed two children while injuring many others at Announcement Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This incident took place against a backdrop of personal turmoil, as Westman had recently ended a long-term relationship with his “fur” girlfriend.
The term “furry” refers to those who are enthusiastic about anthropomorphized animal characters, often dressing up in elaborate costumes. While some regard this subculture as unusual, its members typically see it as a form of creative self-expression.
After the shocking act, Westman’s father mentioned that his son had experienced a significant breakup, which, he believed, might have worsened his mental health. Known as Robert before transitioning, Westman left behind several journals, including a piece titled *Manifesto*, detailing his feelings before the horrific event that resulted in the deaths of 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Merkel.
In his writings, Westman expressed a strong dislike for his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old Abigail Bodic, with whom he had previously shared a close bond. His writings hinted at a dark plan, revealing a desire to harm children at the church. A quote from his journal reflects this troubling mindset: “It feels good to turn it on their stupid heads. The monastery is so stupid.”
Bodic had a social media presence that included a “furry” profile picture, showcasing her interests and previous activities. It seems she has also appeared in photos at an anime convention, dressed in a striking blue wig and cat ears.
Westman’s writings depict a complicated relationship with his identity. On one hand, he found some solace in the “fur” community as a form of escapism. He once noted, “I like to feel sexy and cute, but my face never matches my feelings.” However, he later lamented his shift towards identifying as a “trans woman,” calling it an “embarrassing defeat.” According to one entry, he had even contemplated altering his hairstyle shortly before the attack.
This violent incident has sparked discussions at the Department of Justice about possible measures regarding firearm access for transgender individuals. The motivation behind Westman and Bodic’s breakup remains unclear, though photos from as recently as 2022 show them together, suggesting they had some happy moments.
