Minnesota authorities characterize murder as 'political' amid ongoing questions about the suspect's beliefs.

The Minnesota governor, Tim Walz, has sharply criticized statements suggesting that the recent shooting of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband was politically motivated. This incident took place early Saturday morning, during which the suspect, 57-year-old Vance Luther Belter, was also accused of shooting State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.

Both local and national lawmakers have joined Walz in denouncing the violence, emphasizing that the assault appeared driven by political motives, though the specifics of the suspect’s political inclinations remain unclear.

Belter has been described by his lawyer as someone whose main intent was to “go outside and kill people.” This viewpoint was voiced during a press conference announcing his arrest after a two-day manhunt. Interestingly, while all the victims were Democrats, further inquiries into Belter’s ideology seem speculative at this point.

He has a history of serving on a workforce development committee, appointed by both Democratic governors Mark Dayton and Walz. Friends have portrayed him as having conservative views, with one former acquaintance noting he held some right-leaning beliefs but wasn’t overly zealous about them.

There’s also some strange nuance to Belter’s character; while he reportedly attended a Trump rally, he hasn’t made significant contributions to political committees, nor has he registered as a voter in Minnesota. Records show that he was a registered Republican while living in Oklahoma back in 2004.

Amid the confusion, investigators discovered a manifesto inside Belter’s vehicle that contained the names and addresses of about 70 other civil servants, including abortion rights advocates. Authorities have indicated that these individuals were targeted due to their political positions.

While there are varying opinions about the nature of Belter’s actions—some suggesting they’re just another instance of rising political extremism—Walz emphasized the importance of moving past violence and recognizing it as not the norm in political discourse. He expressed a desire for the nation to unite rather than be immobilized by fear from such acts.
