On Sunday evening, officials in Minnesota indicated that they believe the gunman remains at large amid a complex manhunt linked to the recent killings of state legislators and their spouses.
Warrants at both the state and federal levels have been issued for Vance Boerter, a 57-year-old man accused of murder and attempted murder, as well as evading law enforcement. The manhunt involves over 100 members from various law enforcement agencies, including local, state, and federal levels.
During a press conference on Sunday evening, officials suggested that the suspect may be moving either on foot or utilizing “various means of transportation” to evade capture.
“We haven’t figured out exactly how he is managing to stay out of the area,” noted Drew Evans, the Minnesota Director of Criminal Arrests.
Evans also expressed uncertainty about whether the suspect has a particular destination in mind.
In their search efforts, investigators have received more than 400 tips, while the FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to Boerter’s arrest.
Interestingly, Evans stated there’s no evidence to suggest that the gunman acted in concert with anyone else during the shooting incidents.
“There’s no indication that the individual we’re after has collaborated with anyone else in these actions,” he clarified.
Earlier on Saturday morning, Minnesota State Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband Mark were shot and killed at their residence in Brooklyn Park. Authorities report that Boerter, who has claimed to be a security expert online, fatally shot the couple while impersonating a police officer.
Additionally, State Senator John Hoffman (D) and his wife were shot multiple times at their home, located eight miles away. They have since undergone surgery to treat their injuries.
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) provided updates via social media on Sunday afternoon, stating that Hoffman’s wife Ybette reported the couple had each sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were in recovery at the hospital.
Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz, also a Democrat, referred to the shootings as having “political motivations.”
Evans elaborated on materials recovered by law enforcement, revealing they included documents that do not constitute a “traditional manifesto.” Instead, it was described as a “notebook” containing a list of lawmakers alongside other writings.
An official who reviewed the list mentioned that it includes names of notable figures from Minnesota.
“I want to clarify that it’s not an extensive manifesto providing detailed information and interconnections,” Evans said.
He added, “People often seek straightforward solutions to complex issues.”
Thus far, authorities have not revealed any previous threats associated with Boerter.
“We are anxiously awaiting news on justice and will continue to pursue it relentlessly,” said Mayor Ryan Saba of Champlin, Minnesota.
