Update on Minnesota Lawmakers Shooting Suspect

Officials in Minnesota have provided new information about the ongoing search for Vance Boerter, the suspect in a shooting involving lawmakers on Sunday evening.

Boerter, aged 57, is charged with the murders of Minnesota Senator Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home in Brooklyn Park early Saturday. Additionally, he’s accused of shooting and killing Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at a nearby residence.

Drew Evans, from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), stated that law enforcement is actively pursuing Boerter with both federal and local warrants. “We’ve got information that’s directing our search to Sibley County,” Evans noted, mentioning that they discovered hats in the region that might belong to the suspect. He urged residents in Sibley County to report any suspicious activity to the police.

Evans described their investigation as “fluid,” with authorities currently sorting through around 400 tips. “This situation is quite complex, and our investigators need time to thoroughly examine all the information and evidence,” he explained.

Surveillance footage reveals masked individuals in tactical gear, suggesting a planned attack on the lawmakers, as they reportedly arrived at their homes disguised as police officers.

The manhunt for Boerter intensified on Sunday morning after the shooting. Authorities were questioned about whether the suspect might be trying to flee to Canada, to which Evans replied that, while there’s no specific evidence pointing to a destination, all possibilities are being considered.

Currently, the assumption is that Boerter is still alive. Late Sunday afternoon, the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a vehicle related to the suspect had been located near Highway 25 and 301 Avenue in Faxon Township. “We stayed indoors once we got wind of what was happening,” shared Nate Douglas, a local resident.

Despite the alert regarding the vehicle, no suspects had been apprehended at that point, and residents were advised to secure their homes.

Senator Amy Klobuchar shared a message from Yvette Hoffman, which revealed that John had been shot nine times while Yvette was shot eight times. Klobuchar emphasized the emotional toll on the families involved, expressing that, albeit thankful they are alive, the pain of losing Melissa and Mark is devastating. “There’s absolutely no place for this kind of political hatred,” Yvette wrote.

Officials noted that Boerter had left signs indicating “there is no king” in his vehicle, coinciding with protests scheduled across the U.S. that afternoon against the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
