Democrats have reclaimed the legislative seat previously held by former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman.
In a recent special election, Democratic candidate XP Lee triumphed over Republican Ruth Bitner, according to the Associated Press.
Lee’s win in a district leaning blue marks a pause in the ongoing conflict in Minnesota’s legislature, resulting in each party holding 67 seats.
This election also revives an uneasy balance of power, which had shifted after the Democrats lost their majority in the 2024 election.
Interestingly, this special election took place just a week after Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk stirred national attention, keeping the issue surrounding Hortman’s murder in the public eye.
Prosecutors charge that gunman Vance Bolter posed as a police officer during what they label a “political assassination” targeting both Hortman and her husband, Mark.
Additionally, Bolter allegedly shot and injured Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Senator Yvette, at a nearby residence.
XP Lee, whose family fled the Vietnam War and who was born in a Thai refugee camp, shared with the Associated Press that the tribute to Hortman’s legacy spurred him to run for office. “Without the tragedy of Melissa Hortman’s murder, I probably wouldn’t have entered this race. I’m deeply aware of the impacts of political and gun violence, and I aim to help our community heal,” he stated.
Bitner, who is a real estate agent, conveyed her respect for Hortman, describing her as “a very unique individual” and emphasizing that no one could truly replace her.
The recent surge of violence in Minnesota has left its mark, notably with a tragic shooting at a Catholic school that resulted in the deaths of two young students and injuries to 21 others.
