Minnesota Democrats Propose AR-15 Ban

Democrats in the Minnesota House are advancing a bill aimed at banning the ownership and transfer of AR-15s along with various other semi-automatic rifles. The legislation, known as HF 3433, also makes it illegal to simply possess the Colt AR-15 and a minimum of 25 additional semi-automatic rifles and pistols.

HF 3433 includes specific firearms listed as prohibited:

  • AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikov) semi-automatic rifle.
  • Beretta AR-70 and BM-59 semi-automatic rifles.
  • Colt AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
  • Daewoo Max-1 and Max-2 semi-automatic rifles.
  • MAS semi-automatic rifle.
  • FN-LAR and FN-FNC (Fabrique Nationale) semi-automatic rifles.
  • Galil semi-automatic rifle.
  • HK-91, HK-93, and HK-94 (Heckler & Koch) semi-automatic rifles.
  • MAC-10 and MAC-11 (Ingram) semi-automatic pistols and carbines.
  • TEC-9 (Intratech) semi-automatic pistol.
  • SIG 550SP and SIG 551SP semi-automatic rifles.
  • SKS semi-automatic rifle with a removable magazine.
  • Steyr AUG semi-automatic rifle.
  • Street Sweeper and Striker-12 rotating cylinder shotguns.
  • USAS-12 semi-automatic shotgun.
  • Uzi semi-automatic pistols and carbines.
  • Valmet M76 and M78 semi-automatic rifles.

Additionally, the bill states that any firearm that is a different model but made by the same manufacturer or shares the same design as one of the listed firearms would also fall under this prohibition. This includes any redesigned or renumbered versions.

If the bill is approved and enacted, it would take effect on January 1, 2027. Owners of the banned firearms would then be required to secure a “Certificate of Ownership” from law enforcement if they wish to keep their firearms stored legally.
