Minnesota Senator Convicted of Felony Robbery

Minnesota Senator Nicole Mitchell was found guilty of felony robbery on Friday. This verdict came over a year after her arrest for allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s house.

Since the arrest, there has been significant pressure for Mitchell to resign from both political parties. However, some, like Erin Murphy, the Minnesota Senate majority leader, defended her right to a fair hearing. Murphy, who is also a member of the Democratic Party, expressed relief at the trial’s conclusion, stating it clarified the situation surrounding the case.

“I hope she will honor her commitment to resign if she’s guilty of this crime,” Murphy added. “Our Caucus is focused on issues that matter to Minnesota families and communities.”

Background of the Case

Mitchell was arrested in April 2024 and had claimed she entered her stepmother Carol’s home to retrieve belongings of her deceased father. She testified that her stepmother was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease at the time.

During the trial, Mitchell admitted to trespassing and lying to the police regarding her intentions, but she contended that her actions were motivated by concern for her stepmother.

Details from the Trial

Video footage of Mitchell in a police cruiser was presented during the trial. In it, she told officers, “I’m just trying to get some of my dad’s things.” She also mentioned her desire to collect items like her father’s ashes and photographs.

When apprehended, officers discovered a flashlight hidden in black socks, along with a black backpack containing several personal items, including laptops and identification documents.

Though there’s currently no set date for her sentencing, it’s reported that Mitchell is facing a minimum sentence of six months, potentially extending up to 20 years in prison.
