Suspect in Minnesota Lawmakers’ Killings Captured

After a challenging two-day search, Vance Boerter, the man accused of shooting and killing two Minnesota lawmakers, has been apprehended. Both lawmakers and the state governor expressed their relief and gratitude towards those who contributed to his capture.

House Speaker Lisa Demus took to social media to share her happiness about the suspect being in custody, stating, “I’m incredibly thankful that this ordeal has come to a close, with the suspect charged. Now, we can address the fear he inflicted on Minnesota.”

More than 20 agents worked together to find Boerter, who was arrested in Sibley County. Authorities believe he fatally shot Minnesota Senator Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark at their home in Brooklyn Park, Minneapolis, early Saturday morning. Governor Tim Waltz praised the officers, acknowledging their willingness to put themselves at risk to protect justice for the couple.

Waltz emphasized the need for unity, stressing that violence should not become a norm in society. “We’ve witnessed a divided nation, clearer than ever these past few days,” he stated. He added that moving forward must involve solutions rooted in love and understanding, not hatred or violence.

He urged community members to recognize the grief Hortman’s family is enduring and to honor their memories. “To Melissa and Mark’s family, I cannot fathom your sorrow. We will cherish their memories,” he expressed. He also took a moment to thank law enforcement officers for their bravery and professionalism in handling the situation. “Together, we will not allow fear to dominate our lives,” he concluded.

Minnesota Senator Amy Cronbucher praised the law enforcement efforts, calling the operation a “mammoth and heroic endeavor.” The capture brings at least a semblance of closure to a distressing chapter for the community.
