Minnesota Senator and Wife Shot in Home Attack
Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette disclosed that they were shot 17 times during a harrowing incident involving masked assailants.
The couple was at home with their daughter when they awoke around 2 a.m. on Saturday to what they described as screams and banging noises, which they initially thought were from police officers responding to their location after a Democratic fundraising dinner. Hoffman recounted the experience to local media.
Upon opening the door, they confronted an armed individual.
According to the Hoffmans, “All three of us were in the hallway. John came face-to-face with the gunman, who aimed directly at him, and he was shot nine times.” When John collapsed, Yvette attempted to push the assailant away and close the door, resulting in her being hit eight times during the altercation.
Their daughter, Hope, quickly banged on the door and made a 911 call.
The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, fled the scene and proceeded to a nearby location belonging to Minnesota Assemblyman Melissa Hortman, according to law enforcement.
The Hoffmans expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are heartbroken to learn that our friends Melissa and Mark Hortmann were murdered.” As of now, John is in critical but stable condition after surgery, while Yvette is reported to be stable.
Boelter was captured approximately 43 hours later, following one of the largest manhunts in Minnesota’s history.
This incident is being treated as politically motivated. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz characterized the attack as “targeted political violence.” A comprehensive list of potential targets has been linked to the suspect, featuring names predominantly associated with Democrats or issues like custody and abortion rights.
The Hoffmans acknowledged the sacrifices they make for public service, expressing concerns about the risks faced by those in their positions. They emphasized the need for society to unite in ensuring peaceful living conditions for all.
Boelter currently remains in federal custody on murder charges.
