Minnesota representative who was killed was in the news days before due to an immigration vote.

Minnesota Democrat Rep. Melissa Hortman was fatally shot on Saturday, following a week in which she cast the only Democratic vote to eliminate taxpayer-funded health insurance in the state legislature. After the vote, she expressed her concern for those affected, saying, “I know people will be hurt by that vote. I worked very hard to try a budget transaction that doesn’t include that provision.”

In a closely divided council, Republicans hold a slight edge of 67-66, while the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party maintains control of the Senate with a 34-33 majority. Tragically, Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also injured in the same shooting incident, with both hospitalized after surgery. Additionally, Hortman’s husband was killed during the attack, which investigators believe was carried out by the same perpetrator posing as a police officer.

Despite Hoffman voting against the healthcare cuts, it seems that Governor Tim Waltz is poised to sign the law as part of the budget deal, which also received support from four state senators. The exact reasons behind the shootings remain unclear, although they may be linked to ongoing political tensions; a widely publicized protest titled “No Kings” took place nationwide the same day. The Minnesota State Patrol warned the public against attending planned demonstrations in light of the shootings, urging caution due to heightened awareness and concern.

This tragic event sparked reactions from various political figures. Former President Trump condemned the violence on social media, emphasizing that such acts should not be tolerated and expressing solidarity with the people of Minnesota. Governor Tim Waltz shared his sentiments, saying, “Our state has lost a great leader,” highlighting Hortman’s dedication to service and compassion for constituents.
