Trial of Minnesota Senator for Alleged Burglary
A police bodycam video was presented during the trial of Minnesota Senator Nicole Mitchell, who faces allegations of breaking into her stepmother’s home. The incident reportedly occurred around 4:45 AM on April 22, 2024. Mitchell, a member of the State Democrat-Farmer-Labor Party, has pleaded not guilty to felony first-degree robbery and possession of tools related to burglary.
Mitchell visited the home of her stepmother, Carol Mitchell, in Detroit Lakes. This visit came shortly after a tragic event involving a Democrat, which has somewhat overshadowed the context of the case.
On Wednesday, the prosecution rested its case after showing footage from police body cameras that captured the officers’ response to the incident. In the footage, Mitchell informed the officer, “She’s my stepdaughter,” referring to herself while later questioning her current status as a senator. “Yes, that was,” she said, trying to clarify before alluding to her intentions following the incident.
In a rather revealing moment, Mitchell, handcuffed in a police cruiser, remarked, “Obviously, I’m not good at this.” The bodycam footage depicted her explaining that she was attempting to retrieve items belonging to her deceased father—his ashes, photographs, and clothing—items her stepmother allegedly refused to give her.
Authorities discovered Mitchell in the basement, dressed in black, and noted that she had a flashlight concealed in black socks. A search revealed a black backpack lodged in a window, containing two laptops, a mobile phone, a driver’s license, Senate ID, and some Tupperware products.
At one point during the interaction, she said, “She wouldn’t talk to me anymore, so I was trying to get some of my dad’s.” This statement illustrates the underlying emotional turmoil that seems to surround this case.
While the prosecution described Mitchell’s actions as premeditated, her defense painted a picture of a distressed stepdaughter trying to connect with her late father’s belongings. During the trial, Carol Mitchell expressed feeling “very violated” due to the alleged incident.
