Minnie Driver Takes on Sarah in “The Faithful: Women of the Bible”

British-American actress and singer Minnie Driver has shared that portraying the Biblical character Sarah in the upcoming Fox miniseries “The Faithful: Women of the Bible” required significant personal and professional courage.

“Throughout my career, I’ve been attracted to roles that involve women making significant leaps of faith, whether in love, emotionally, or morally,” Driver remarked before the show’s premiere at the National Portrait Gallery in London. “Taking on the role of Sarah meant I had to embrace all of that and more, as she is an extraordinary figure with a profound spiritual journey,” she added.

The miniseries is set to debut on March 22nd, with additional episodes airing on March 29th and April 5th, in line with Easter Sunday. It’s a retelling of the book of Genesis, illustrated through the eyes of several notable women from the Bible.

In this series, Driver plays Sarah, the wife of Abraham, a character portrayed by Jeffrey Donovan. Their storyline delves into their struggles with parenthood, including Abraham’s relationship with his servant Hagar, played by Natacha Karam, to secure an heir.

Driver described Sarah’s journey of faith as both compelling and complex, noting, “Her path has been a truly fascinating and challenging one. Like all memorable stories, Sarah’s life resonates on many levels.” She expressed enthusiasm about shedding light on Sarah’s experience alongside other remarkable biblical matriarchs.

This production is a project of Fox Entertainment Studios, with Carol Mendelsohn, known for “CSI: Forensic Investigation,” serving as one of the executive producers. According to its description, the series “explores the lives of Genesis’ women as they navigate themes of love, marriage, motherhood, and faith while their descendants establish Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.” The narrative focuses on their personal struggles and relationships.

Commenting on the shift in the industry, Christian Toto, host of “The Hollywood” podcast, remarked that having someone like Driver involved in faith-centered productions signals a significant change. He noted that faith-oriented content is evolving past its previous reputation, with well-known actors now joining the genre, owing to larger budgets and better support from platforms like Prime Video and Netflix. Toto highlighted that many recent projects are drawing considerable audiences, which is vital in an industry that hasn’t typically embraced spiritual narratives.
