a grandmother A Louisiana woman is both happy and saddened after her 1-year-old grandson was found alive just hours after his 4-year-old brother’s body was pulled from a lake.
Tragic Storm
Hurricane Beryl The hurricane made landfall early Monday, dumping heavy rain and knocking out power to about 3 million people in Texas, as well as causing similar disruption in Vinton, Louisiana, a city of about 3,400 people just east of the Texas border.
On Monday afternoon, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report of a body floating in the lake just behind the Vinton Welcome Center. The department subsequently released a brief description of the deceased. FacebookThey simply referred to him as “the African-American kid.”
Shortly thereafter, Conswell Jack A woman from Lake Charles, Louisiana came forward fearing the body she found was that of her 4-year-old grandson, Legend, and sadly, she was correct.
‘It was like I was broken’: The story of a troubled family
Already heartbroken, Jack told police Legend has a one-year-old brother, Kingtrail, whom he hasn’t seen since their mother’s funeral on Saturday.
“We were in the process of moving assets out to Vinton to search the waters to see if we could find the yearling.”
Jack also shared information about Kingtrail’s family, raising concerns for everyone. Jack claimed that the mother of his two boys is his 25-year-old daughter, Aaliyah Jack. Aaliyah has legal custody of the boys, but has “hit a rough patch” recently, Jack said.
So Conswella Jack decided to look after Kingtrail, the boys’ paternal grandmother looked after Legend, and Aaliyah Jack fled to Baton Rouge for unknown reasons. The family was reunited on Saturday at the funeral of Conswella’s mother.
Aaliyah also attended the funeral, during which she regained custody of her sons and left.
For the next few hours, Konswela tried desperately to contact Aaliyah. “I tried calling her the next day, a Sunday, and finally got through to her, but it was a text message,” Konswela recalled. “She sent me a picture of her car in the bushes, looking like it had been in an accident.”“
Aaliyah has not been in contact since and Konswela told investigators she fears Kingtrail will suffer the same fate as Legend.
“We were in the process of moving assets to Vinton and searching the waters to ascertain the location of the 1-year-old,” Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory said.
“He smiled at me”: a miraculous discovery
Around 9 a.m. Tuesday, as sheriff’s deputies and the Jack family prepared for the worst on the King Trail, a truck driver, unaware of the recent tragedy, was driving normally on Interstate 10 not far from the Vinton Welcome Center when suddenly he spotted something in a ditch on the side of the road.
“There was a little boy sitting on the bank,” the unidentified truck driver recalled.
“I walked up to him and he smiled at me and then he started crying and walked over to me,” he continued. “He walked over to me and I grabbed his hand and he stopped crying at that point.”
The truck driver called the police, who later confirmed that the boy was indeed the missing Kingtrail. The boy had suffered insect bites but was otherwise in good condition and has since been released from hospital.
Sheriff Guillory said he considers Kingtrail “our miracle baby.” “He spent two days on the side of the highway in bad weather,” a disbelieving Sheriff Guillory said at a news conference. “We’re just so grateful that the truck driver found him.”
“can’t believe it.”
“So happy… but so hurt”: The aftermath continues
Aaliyah Jack was then served with an arrest warrant for failure to report a missing child and was soon taken into custody in Meridian, Mississippi, about 400 miles east of Vinton, Louisiana, where her sons were found. She is currently fighting extradition to Louisiana, where she is being held on $300,000 bail.
Meanwhile, her mother is grieving the death of one grandchild and fighting for custody of the other. “I was so happy to hear the baby survived, but I’m so saddened that one of them has died,” Conswella Jack said.
“They’re just putting me through all the things I’m about to go through, and it’s stressful. [Kingtrail] “I have to do everything in my power to get my baby back,” she continued. “We don’t even have the funds to do that, so we have to do everything we can to get him back because no one knows him better than we do.”
King Trail is currently believed to be in state custody. The body recovered showed no visible trauma and so far the cause of Legend’s death is unknown. Autopsy results are still pending.
More charges may be filed in the case.
