Mirra Andreeva had a surprising encounter at the US Open on Monday.
The young Russian tennis player, just 18 years old, was sitting next to her partner Diana Shnaider when a man wearing an American hat approached them. This happened right after Andreeva’s victory over Aoyama and Wang Yafan.
He seemed to be saying something to the duo, and they engaged in a brief chat before turning back to him.
The man waved, smiling, and appeared to be saying more.
It looked like Shnaider and Andreeva exchanged glances, perhaps thinking, “Can you believe this?” Before long, Shnaider burst out laughing.
Andreeva seemed to follow the conversation before they began talking off-camera.
It was a rather awkward yet seemingly harmless exchange, showcasing the unpredictable moments that can occur with fans during such tournaments.
In a separate incident, a Polish CEO got into hot water after taking a hat from a child that was signed by Kamil Magitzilzak, later apologizing for his actions.
“I sincerely apologize to the boy, his family, all his fans, and the player himself,” Piotr Szczerek expressed in a translated Facebook post. “I take full responsibility for my poor judgment. It was never my intention to take something valuable from young fans… This has been a painful yet necessary lesson.”
Earlier on Monday, security had to step in when fans reached for the zipper in Jannik Sinner’s bag, causing quite a stir.
As security assessed the situation, the individual quickly backed away.
The US Open is nearing its finale, with the women’s singles semi-finals set for Thursday night. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will take on Jessica Pegula in the first match, followed by Naomi Osaka against Amanda Anisimova in the nightcap.
The men’s semi-finals are scheduled for Friday, featuring Carlos Alcaraz against Novak Djokovic first, and then Jannik Sinner facing Felix Auger-Aliassime.
While Andreeva and Shnaider were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, No. 5 seed Andreeva also experienced a surprising loss in the third round to Taylor Townsend last week.
