Miss your flip phone? A growing number of people are ditching the smartphone for ‘dumb phones’

Smartphones can do so much these days that their function as actual phones, while natural, seems unimportant. The expansion of smartphone apps and features clearly appeals to people who grew up corded and with shared lines, people whose old-world habits keep them excited about such novelties.

But it seems some smartphone users are tired of being promised something all the time. Slightly What’s better is that consumers prefer something radically different, even if that change means taking a step back.

Schools aren’t the only ones discovering the appeal of limited-feature mobile phones, with some parents giving their children less technologically advanced mobile phones to avoid the distractions and mental destruction that social media can bring.

So-called “dumb phones” appear to be growing in popularity as an alternative rather than a go-to for seniors, drug dealers and others whose lifestyle choices may require a cheap, basic, possibly disposable mobile phone device.

Brian Romell, president of Multiplex Magazine, recently said: attention “Dumb phones, or flip phones, are exploding in popularity among the 14-25 age group, with many stores experiencing back orders.”

“This isn’t a fashion trend, it’s just our parents’ and grandparents’ boredom with their new, outdated smartphones.” Tweeted Roemer.

Canadian technology columnist Pascal Forget also agreed with the proposal. tell Canadian national media: “Smartphones are no longer a source of entertainment”

For Gen Z and millennial users, smartphones “used to be fun, but now they’re addicted, and they want to go back to a simpler time with a simpler device,” he said.

economist Shown The company said earlier this month that dumb phones account for about 2% of cell phone sales in the U.S., and Romer suggested demand is growing. The phenomenon isn’t limited to the U.S.

North of the border, mobile phone purchases were reported to have increased by 25 percent last year, with sales exceeding 98,600 units.

Subreddit r/Dumbphone What is a “Dumbphone”?

A mobile phone with fewer or no “smart” features than a smartphone. They are actually called “feature phones”, but are commonly referred to as dumb phones because they are considered the opposite of a smartphone. Dumb phones lack the advanced technology of a smartphone and usually only have core tools like calling, texting, and sometimes a calendar and notes, but no feature-rich apps like social media or maps.

While some young people may buy dumb phones out of boredom, there are many other factors at play.

Smartphones and their social media apps Linked It is linked to a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety and, perhaps paradoxically, loneliness, and regular use also impacts cognitive performance.

a study A study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports last year found that smartphone use leads to reduced attention: “Just having a smartphone in front of you consumes cognitive resources, even if you’re not deliberately paying attention to it or actively using it.”

The Economist noted that recognising the harmful effects of smartphone use, some schools, such as Britain’s prestigious Eton College, are giving students lower-spec mobile phones and banning the use of more powerful alternatives.

Schools aren’t the only ones discovering the appeal of limited-feature mobile phones, with some parents giving their children less technologically advanced mobile phones to avoid the distractions and mental destruction that social media can bring.

“With smartphones and screens, you can’t practice your guitar or read a book, you just get bored,” Lee Tainan told Canadian national media. “I felt really uneasy about my daughter being online all the time, so I’m trying to keep her away from it for as long as possible.”

According to Roemer, even though Nokia’s flip phones are cheaper than other phones, the most popular flip phone among the “younger demographic” he observed was the TracFone TCL Flip 2. Frequently recommended As the best dumb phone.

I’m a losing member of the younger generation, but I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I went after the TCL Flip 2 for under $40.

As soon as I got my dumb phone, I was reminded why, decades ago, the Blackberry with its QWERTY keyboard was preferred by people with little patience or who didn’t want to learn how to quickly enter text using number keys with three or four letters assigned to them.

For the Luddite wing of the dumbphone movement, part of the appeal seems to be making texting and web browsing so intrusive that it discourages users from trying it in the first place. Mission accomplishedTexting was such a pain that I gave up the effort altogether.

Luckily, the TCL Flip 2 doubles as a phone, making it easy to talk to people on the other end, and for this purpose, the phone works admirably: the sound from the handset was crisp and my voice was easily heard by the other person.

Because the phone is dedicated to a single purpose rather than dedicating computing power to ad trackers and other background processes, battery life is excellent, especially when compared to my supposedly smart Samsung Galaxy. The phone also withstood the wreckage of a toddler who is currently eager to explore the inner workings of various electronic devices around the house.

The tagline for r/Dumbphones is “Join the revolution and enjoy the simple life!”

It’s a really simple life.

With no social media apps and a camera so useless that it feels like a waste of parts, the Flip 2 certainly offers freedom. After all, your phone reflexes may sit idle, but there’s virtually nothing worth doing with the phone apart from calling loved ones.

Only time will tell if the dumbphone movement will stick around, but there’s certainly something there. Freed from the obligation to take photos or scroll through depressing news, you just live in the moment. And if it’s boring, that’s your own fault.
