Missing North Carolina Woman Found After 24 Years, Faces Charges

A North Carolina woman, whose disappearance in 2001 led to a lengthy search, is now dealing with criminal charges from the time she went missing.

Michelle Hundley-Smith, age 63, was recently located in North Carolina on February 20. This followed new tips that prompted detectives to re-examine her case, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

In December 2001, Smith, then 38, reportedly left her home in Eden to shop for Christmas gifts in Martinsville, Virginia, but never came back. Her vehicle was never discovered.

A significant search effort ensued, but years passed without any leads on her location until last week.

Authorities noted that Smith had mentioned to investigators that she left voluntarily due to “domestic issues.” Sheriff Sam Page informed media outlets that there were no previous records of domestic incidents reported at her residence. While no charges are connected to her earlier disappearance, her identity verification revealed an outstanding arrest warrant from 2001.

This warrant originated from a DWI charge that was issued by the Eden Police Department on November 11, 2001. Smith did not appear for her court date on December 27, 2001.

On February 25, 2026, Smith was arrested at the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office upon request from Rockingham County authorities. She posted a $2,000 bail and has a court appearance scheduled for March 26, 2026.

Reportedly found living in a rural area near the South Carolina border, Smith expressed a desire for privacy, stating that her daughter has forgiven her and they maintain contact. Neighbors mentioned she had lived there for years, often alone, and indicated she was grieving her husband’s recent death.

Reflecting on her past, Smith’s daughter, Amanda Hundley, indicated in a previous interview that her mother’s marriage struggled under the pressures of alcoholism and infidelity. Hundley shared that her mother lost her job shortly before her disappearance, which likely contributed to the turmoil.

The family situation was evidently complicated, with conflicting emotions and a sense of obligation. Hundley recounted feeling the pressure of keeping her mother’s drinking a secret.

Smith’s case, long shrouded in mystery, has taken a surprising turn, highlighting both the struggles of domestic life and the unpredictable nature of personal crises.
