Rescue teams in New Hampshire have recovered the body of a hiker killed by severe weather in the White Mountains.

Fish and Game officials noticed the stranded hiker on Tuesday night when loved ones called for help after speaking with Christopher Roman, 37, who was stranded on the treacherous mountain.

“Finally, [Roma] contacted NH911 and the coordinates of the hiker's location between Mount Bond and Mount Guyot were obtained. “Before the call went out, the hiker stated that it was very cold,” the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Department report states.

“The weather forecast for the area was high winds, single-digit temperatures, and snow.''

Fish and Game, Pemi Valley Search and Rescue Team, and Mountain Rescue Team began a rescue operation for Roma.

But their efforts were hampered by the same bad weather that stranded him.

“Rescue efforts were delayed as rescuers had to trudge through waist-deep snow, and once rescuers were exposed above the tree line, they faced strong winds and blizzards.” Game and Game Law Enforcement Agency said. “Recognizing the slow progress, the New Hampshire Army National Guard was requested and attempted to rescue the hikers by helicopter.”

By 5pm on Wednesday, a rescue team from the Mountain Department arrived at the scene in Rome, but it was determined that the man could not survive the harsh conditions and had died.

The New Hampshire Army National Guard was called in to rescue the bodies by helicopter, and after battling low clouds and strong winds, the operation was completed Thursday morning.

“The helicopter landed at approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, and was able to recover the deceased hiker's body,” the Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division report states. “The aerial recovery, which involved 15 conservation officers and over 30 volunteers, saved the animal from a difficult evacuation as it was on foot along the mountain trail.”

Authorities noted that Roma was a highly skilled hiker with extensive experience in the area.

The deceased's family and friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for funeral costs, ease the family's financial burden and support their two-year-old son.
