Mississippi police officer fatally shot, 2 others wounded by gunfire at traffic checkpoint: ‘Heroes in blue’

A small town in Mississippi is in mourning after a shooting left one police officer dead and two injured.

According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the shooting occurred while Summit Police Department officers were performing their duties at a traffic checkpoint.

During the exchange, a vehicle approached and the passenger fired a gun at the officers, killing one officer and wounding two others.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves identified the dead officer as Officer Troy Floyd of the Summit Police Department.

Reeves said Floyd was “killed by a criminal while bravely carrying out his duties as a police officer.”

Macomb Police Department officers Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts were shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Reeves said.

Authorities said the suspect was shot and killed.

Reeves offered condolences to Officer Floyd’s family and friends and said law enforcement “represents the best of the state of Mississippi.”

“The entire state of Mississippi is with them as we honor and mourn this hero who was lost too soon,” he said.

The shooting is being investigated by agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI).

Summit has a population of about 1,460 and is located about 75 miles south of the state capital, Jackson.
