A Mississippi teenager is accused of murdering her mother and then sitting in her kitchen with her two dogs when she texted a friend that she had an “emergency” and tried to lure her stepfather back into the house.
Carly Gregg, 15, is accused of murdering her mother, Ashley Smiley, a high school teacher, in their home in Brandon, Mississippi, on March 19. At the time, Smiley had discovered her daughter's “secret life.”
Footage shown in a Rankin County courtroom on Tuesday showed Gregg wearing a Nirvana band T-shirt and awkwardly walking around the house with what was later determined to be a .357 Magnum-caliber handgun concealed behind his back, facing the camera to avoid it detecting the gun.
The girl ran across the house and hid behind a wall before entering her mother's bedroom, when a loud noise, possibly a gunshot, rang out and Smiley was caught on camera screaming. Obtained by law and crime Captured.
Two more shots were then fired.
Gregg returned to the kitchen 10 seconds after the shooting, again hiding his weapon, grabbing his mother's cell phone from the counter and sitting in a chair with their two dogs standing nearby.
Prosecutors allege Greg was trying to lure his stepfather, Heath Smiley, back to the house.
According to the media, the text message read: “Honey, when are you coming home?”
When Heath Smiley returned home, Greg shot him in the shoulder, after which his stepfather subdued her and took the gun from her.
The mother and daughter couple had just returned home from school when the teenager let the dog out. Ashley Smiley searched Greg's room and found a vape pen. According to WLBT.
A math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School had been informed earlier in the day that Greg had been using drugs.
The boy, who was 14 at the time, was seen on the home's surveillance camera pacing around the house before firing three shots at Smiley.
Prosecutors charge that the girl killed her mother because a friend had told her about Gregg's “secret life” with drugs on the day of the shooting.
“According to friends, he was very concerned about Carly smoking marijuana, getting high and having a disposable cell phone. [Carly’s] “His mother did not know, but he felt he had to tell Miss Ashley Smiley that day,” Rankin County said. the assistant district attorney said Monday.
Gregg allegedly texted a friend and asked him to come over to his house claiming to have an “emergency” before revealing the horrifying situation.
“Have you seen the body? My mother is there,” the friend insisted. According to WLBT.
Ashley Smiley, 40, was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the face.
Gregg broke down in tears Monday when body camera footage was shown in court when deputies from the sheriff's office arrived at the home to find Heath Smiley crying and saying his wife was dead inside.
Psychiatrist Dr Andrew Clark testified that the girl was experiencing a mental health crisis that day, was experiencing auditory hallucinations, dissociative disorders and her mood swings were being significantly exacerbated by her medication.
“And then her mother found out she was smoking marijuana,” Clark said in court. According to WAPT“This was a crisis for Carly in particular, as she cared so much about her mother's approval.”
Clark and Heath Smiley told the court Gregg had no recollection of the shooting.
“I've never seen anyone like that, even in the movies. She wasn't her real self and I don't think she recognised me,” Smiley said at her stepdaughter's trial.
He added that he still keeps in daily contact with Greg and that their relationship is “good.”
Gregg was charged with murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence.
She rejected a plea deal and, if convicted, faces life in prison for murder plus 30 years to life on the other charges.
