Missouri Prosecutor Removed Amid Affair Allegations

A prominent prosecutor in Missouri has been removed from her position following serious allegations regarding her conduct. Camille Johnston, who was investigating an undocumented immigrant for sexual assault, also reportedly had an affair with him, raising significant conflict of interest concerns. Court documents indicate that her actions involved not just this individual, but also two other men.

Missouri Attorney General Kathleen Hannaway made the announcement on Johnston’s removal, citing various allegations of misconduct during her three and a half years in office.

Johnston, who took up her role on January 1, 2023, is accused of compromising the integrity of her office due to her personal relationships. Notably, she allegedly helped her ex-boyfriend, a Mexican man who had been in the U.S. unlawfully since 2019, evade arrest for sexual assault charges that year.

While the details about when they ended their relationship are unclear, the court filing claims that Johnston’s ex-boyfriend traveled to Mississippi, where she was reportedly hiding, and provided her with a vehicle to help him escape legal repercussions.

Additionally, Johnston vacationed with another man, referred to as JG, in Florida during this period. Local reports suggest that Johnston was dating JG when he allegedly assaulted another woman. She claims she was unaware of the allegations against him until after their relationship had ended.

JG was eventually apprehended in Ohio in 2024 and awaits trial for the alleged assault. Documents filed assert that Johnston concealed her relationship with him from the victim and law enforcement, failing to pursue appropriate charges.

Moreover, the allegations indicate Johnston had further inappropriate relationships while in office. One was with a lawyer involved in a case she was prosecuting; another involved a married man accused of domestic violence.

It has been reported that Johnston terminated an office employee who raised concerns about her conduct. Currently, she is involved with the defense attorney representing a defendant in a case she was overseeing, further complicating her professional obligations.

Court documents further suggest that Johnston’s relationships compromised her role, with indications of potential corruption and obstruction of justice. A judge approved the petition for her removal, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining public trust in elected officials.

Hannaway’s statement highlighted the critical nature of accountability in public office, declaring, “When elected officials treat public office as their personal playground… removal is not a suggestion, it is a necessity.”

Efforts to reach Johnston’s attorney for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
