A Missouri man allegedly installed a hidden camera on his teacher's wife because he suspected she was trying to poison him. A woman was reportedly caught on surveillance camera poisoning her smoothie with a deadly plant.
Sarah Schaeffer of Jefferson City was arrested Wednesday. She was charged with first-degree domestic assault, attempted first-degree murder, and armed criminal action.
Schaefer's husband said she experienced a series of strange and debilitating symptoms over a six-week period.
“The victim described eight incidents in which the defendant offered her strange-tasting drinks or food and immediately after ingestion she experienced extreme fatigue, confusion, blurred vision, severe cotton mouth, and nausea.” The statement of said.
On January 1, a husband confronted his wife after she reportedly served him a drink that had a “bitter taste.”
Schaeffer allegedly told her husband that she urinated in his drink. She then “admitted that she had put industrial-strength adhesive in it,” according to the probable cause statement. She said Schaeffer changed her story again and she allegedly denied that she had added any substances to her drink.
After the alleged incident, the husband installed a surveillance camera in the couple's kitchen.
Her husband claimed to have found a green bowl of roots in a bag labeled “lilies of the field” on Schaefer's desk.
A hidden camera also showed Shaffer preparing a smoothie for her husband. According to her statement, Schaeffer added the contents of her green bowl to her smoothie.
Her husband turned the video over to the police. According to the probable cause statement, Schaefer confessed to putting the lily of the valley in the smoothie when law enforcement was present.
”[Scheffer] A statement believed to have admitted adding lily of the valley root to the blender while preparing the victim's smoothie drink. read. ”[Scheffer] Admitted doing this with intent to harm the victim…Admitted knowing that ingesting 'lily of the valley' could cause death… [and] He admitted knowing that it was illegal. ”

Jefferson City Police Department officers seized the blender and sent the contents to a state lab for testing.
Schaefer is being held in the Cole County Jail without bail.

KMIZ Schaefer is a 37-year-old part-time instructor of design and art at Calvary Lutheran High School in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Schaeffer was reportedly suspended from school following the accusations. She is no longer on the school's online faculty page.
