Mitch McConnell Falls at Capitol, Receives Medical Treatment

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) suffered a fall at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday and required medical treatment.

The longtime Republican leader collapsed after addressing a group at the Senate Republican Conference's weekly Tuesday luncheon, Punchbowl News reported.

McConnell reportedly suffered cuts to his face. The 82-year-old man was taken to the Capitol office and treated by emergency medical technicians who entered the office in a wheelchair.

His office had no immediate comment on his condition. Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota) will replace McConnell as party leader. said Mr. McConnell attended his regularly scheduled lunch press conference Tuesday and appeared in good spirits.

McConnell announced in February that he was stepping down from his leadership post, citing evolving dynamics in the chamber and rumors of a coup threatening his position.

The leader also froze in public on at least two occasions, appearing unable to speak or move, and requiring senators and aides to slowly guide him away from cameras.

Mr. McConnell also appeared at the Capitol with unexplained injuries, including what appeared to be deep bruises on his hands.

Mr. Thune won the conference-wide election in November and replaced Mr. McConnell as Republican leader.

This is an ongoing development.
