MLB insisted there are no major changes to the pants in the new uniforms, which have been widely criticized.
The new jersey, designed by Nike and manufactured by Fanatics, has come under heavy criticism for a variety of reasons, most notably the see-through nature of the pants.
In a photo that went viral on Thursday, Giants infielder Casey Schmidt’s crotch area was visible through his pants as he posed for a team photo day wearing his new uniform.
Elsewhere, the Mariners posted a video of catcher Cal Lowry’s upper body showing through his pants.
MLB: “The uniform pants are the same material and thickness as the uniform pants used last season.” told the Wall Street Journal In a statement. “The jersey fabric has been changed, not the pants.”
However, there are changes in the style and size of the pants.
To that end, Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle said his pants are noticeably tighter this year.
“Even I didn’t think there was much growth over the last few years,” Kahnley told The Post’s Greg Joyce. “But definitely this year you’ll notice that the fabric is a little bit tighter than in the past.
“I think the consensus is they’re not that great. … I know a lot of people don’t really like them.”
The uniform top has also been ridiculed, with Mets star Francisco Lindor telling the Post’s Mike Pujima that the players’ names “kind of look small.”
In other instances, players noticed that the stitching on their tops was not the same as that of their teammates.
“It’s unfortunate that uniforms have become a topic of discussion,” Clark, executive director of the MLB Players Association, said Thursday. Per ESPN. “Every time we have a conversation with them, we learn more about what we’re seeing.
“A lot of the rhetoric is confirmation that the pants are see-through. It’s an ongoing conversation, and each day has produced something new, but it doesn’t seem to be as meaningful as you’d like. ”
