Rodry Munoz’s rookie season started off with optimism as the 24-year-old has strong velocity on his fastball.
Inconsistent zone control has hindered him in the 10 games he has started, but hey, he’s playing for the Marlins.
Let’s start by stating the obvious: the Marlins are a weak professional baseball team.
They have the second-lowest weighted runs created plus (wRC+), a number that suggests any Marlins starting pitcher will struggle to provide run support.
Munoz’s 5.47 ERA has been hurt by a lackluster defense, with Miami’s defensive runs prevented by minus-34, the second-worst in MLB.
So, despite Munoz having a fairly effective mix of pitches, he’s allowed home runs with all five of his pitches, and the young pitcher’s performance is suffering because of the players around him.
The right-hander was never a strikeout powerhouse in the minor leagues, but since being promoted from Triple-A he’s been hitting more hard, walking more batters and seeing a drop in his strikeout rate (7.41 per nine innings).
Munoz has missed a strikeout prop in five straight games entering Saturday’s game against the Mets.
Everything you need to know about MLB betting
Munoz struck out five Mets batters on June 13, but he was vulnerable at LawnDepot Park and I would be hesitant to trust him again.
He will also be facing a Mets offense that has the No. 1 contact rate over the past month.
