MLB Suspends Managers After Tense Dodgers-Padres Game

In a recent turn of events, MLB has suspended Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and San Diego Padres manager Mike Schilt for one game each, following a chaotic incident during a match on Thursday night.

The situation escalated when Padres reliever Robert Suarez was handed a three-game suspension for hitting Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani with a pitch during the turmoil. The tension began as Fernando Tatis Jr. stepped up to bat with the Padres leading 5-0 in the ninth inning.

Dodgers relief pitcher Jack Little threw a fastball that struck Tatis, marking the third time this season that a Dodgers pitcher has hit him. Schilt wasn’t pleased about his star player getting hit, which prompted him to rush out of the dugout and direct his frustrations at the Dodgers’ bench.

As Schilt approached the field, Roberts also came out of his dugout, leading to a brief confrontation between the two. The benches cleared, both teams emptied their dugouts, and things were getting heated. Though order was eventually restored and both managers were removed from the game, the altercations weren’t over just yet.

In the bottom of the ninth, with a score of 5-2, Suarez was on the mound when he hit Ohtani again, this time with a 100 mph fastball to the shoulder. Ohtani, visibly frustrated, walked toward first base while Suarez was ejected for the incident.

This marked the second time in the series that Ohtani was hit. Interestingly, Tatis also faced his sixth time being hit by Dodgers pitches over his career. The Padres managed to win the game 5-3, but the real concern loomed over Tatis’ X-ray and CT scan results following the pitch.

Manny Machado, the Padres’ third baseman, expressed his apprehensions, hoping for negative results from Tatis’ medical tests. “They should come back negative tomorrow,” he remarked, stressing the importance of Tatis to the team’s success.

Schilt voiced his frustrations, pointing out that whether the hit was intentional or not, it highlighted a serious issue. “We have a guy who’s going to be evaluated right now. He’s one of the best players in the game,” he said.

Roberts, on the other hand, admitted feeling uneasy about Schilt’s outburst. “It bothered me when he came out and yelled at me,” he commented. Nonetheless, he praised Ohtani for maintaining composure through it all.

Roberts reflected on the situation: “I don’t think he was hurt by it. He didn’t want any more drama.” The Dodgers have now won three of the four games in this series, and five out of the seven games they’ve played against the Padres this season.

Looking ahead, these two NL West rivals are set to meet again in Los Angeles from August 15 to 17 and in San Diego from August 22 to 24.
