MLB trade deadline: Gold Glove recipient Ke'Bryan Hayes traded from Pirates to Reds

In a notable NL Central trade, the Pittsburgh Pirates have sent third baseman Ke’bryan Hayes to the Cincinnati Reds just before the MLB deadline on Thursday night. This move brings reliever Taylor Rogers and young shortstop Sammy Stafra back to Pittsburgh.

At 28 years old and the son of former MLB player Charlie Hayes, Ke’bryan has recently signed an impressive eight-year, $70 million contract, aiming to be a key player for the Pirates. However, the team seems to be shifting gears, focusing on a rebuild to manage their finances for the future.

Interestingly, the Reds now have control over Hayes through the 2029 season. Although he has faced some challenges at the plate this season, he is well-regarded for his defensive skills, having previously earned Gold Glove accolades. Last season, he led the league with 21 saved runs at third base, and his defensive capabilities remain a highlight of his career, especially when considering his consistent performances over the past couple of years.

The Reds are clearly seeking to bolster their defense as they aim for a playoff berth in 2025, especially with the Milwaukee Brewers currently holding a notable lead in the NL Central. Cincinnati is only three games shy of a wildcard spot, and there’s still ample time for them to secure one of the three wildcard positions in the National League, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2020.

Over his six seasons with the Pirates, Hayes has amassed a batting line of .254/.307/.369, hitting 39 home runs, 101 doubles, and driving in 212 runs across 576 games.
