MLB umpire criticized for overlooking clear strike in Orioles-Blue Jays game

MLB Umpire Faces Backlash After Controversial Call

In recent times, MLB umpires have come under intense scrutiny, especially those umpires stationed behind home plate. This past Monday, fans were left frustrated following a controversial call during a game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays.

In this AL East matchup, Orioles pitcher Zach Eflin threw a pitch that curved sharply from left to right, landing squarely in the strike zone. Blue Jays batter Ernie Clement seemed poised to take a swing, which would suggest he expected it to be called a strike.

However, home plate umpire Brian Walsh stood still, signaling that it was a ball in his view. Eflin and catcher Adley Rutschman were left in disbelief, exchanging incredulous looks at Walsh for his decision not to call it a strike.

One of the Orioles announcers remarked, “Wait a minute,” as the shocking call unfolded on air. His partner responded with, “My goodness! That pitch was right down the center. How do you miss that?” It was clear that both the players and announcers were taken aback.

Fortunately for the Orioles, the game itself turned out well for them, as they ultimately defeated the Blue Jays with a score of 11-4. But it wasn’t the first time Walsh found himself criticized. Earlier, he had made several questionable calls during a ninth-inning finish between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Houston Astros.

During that game, All-Star Ketel Marte was at bat when he faced a 3-2 pitch. Although the pitch from Josh Hader clearly missed the strike zone, Walsh called it strike three, leaving the Diamondbacks and their fans fuming.

Marte exited the field without addressing Walsh directly, but the commentary from the Diamondbacks’ broadcast team indicated they were not pleased with the call.
