Messi’s Tension with MLS Commissioner Remains Unclear
The recent interaction between Lionel Messi and MLS Commissioner Don Garber has left many questions unanswered.
Garber, who is set to leave his position, refrained from explaining why Messi seemed upset with him after Inter Miami’s victory in the Campeones Cup last September. However, during a discussion at the Front Office Sports “Tuned In” summit in New York, he praised Messi, calling him the “greatest athlete of all time.”
He remarked, “The best players in the world have passion. The legendary players have even more.” He noted that players like Messi possess a unique intensity and drive that distinguish them, claiming, “What happened there is between me and Leo, not something I’m going to disclose.”
Since joining Major League Soccer in 2023, Messi is often regarded as the highlight of the league, drawing considerable attention. Nevertheless, his relationship with Garber hasn’t always been smooth. Last season, both Messi and Inter Miami expressed frustration when he received a one-game suspension for missing the MLS All-Star game, which violated league policies.
Despite not clarifying what triggered Messi’s frustration that night, Garber emphasized the Argentine’s incredible passion for the game. “I believe that’s what solidifies Leo Messi as the greatest player in soccer history, and I’d argue he’s the greatest athlete of all time,” he stated, acknowledging Messi’s unmatched achievements and respect within the sport.
Recently, Messi played his final international match in Buenos Aires, which was an emotional farewell for both him and his fans, capping it off with one last goal for Argentina.
Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has scored 104 goals across all competitions and has been instrumental in securing the team’s first MLS Cup title last season.
As Garber prepares to step down from his role, he will pass the baton to Larry Berg on January 1, leaving behind a mixed legacy intertwined with Messi’s tenure in MLS.
