MLS fan says St. Louis City SC security took him out of the game because of his Trump hat

Incident at Major League Soccer Game

A recent video shared on social media highlights an incident involving a man at a Major League Soccer match who claimed he was asked to leave due to his hat. The individual, identified as Michael Weitzel, wore a red “American great” hat while attending a game at Energy Park, home of St. Louis City SC.

In the footage, Weitzel stated, “I’m Michael Weitzel and I was asked to leave for Donald Trump’s hat,” during an exchange with security personnel. A security team member explained that the venue maintains a neutral stance and does not allow any political messaging.

Weitzel countered by observing that other fans were displaying flags, which he considered inherently political. However, security clarified that those flags had been pre-approved.

The park’s regulations ban political flags within the stadium, but it appears there was no mention of hats specifically. Weitzel then raised questions about the uniform enforcement of these rules. After discussions with officials, he claimed he faced the possibility of arrest and sought clarification on his removal from the venue.

As he made his way towards the concourse, he asserted that “Trump is not welcome at the St. Louis City SC Club.” Security staff mentioned that if he removed his hat, he could return to his seat. Weitzel asked, “If I take my hat off, can I come back?” He briefly took it off but was told it was too late, leading him to put the hat back on his head.

In his final comments, he remarked, “It’s not his fault. He’s just following the rules,” referring to a security guard. He concluded, “So this is what happens when you wear a Donald Trump hat at a SC game in St. Louis.”

As of now, St. Louis City SC has not issued a public statement regarding the situation, and the team is set to be ranked 14th in the MLS Western Conference.
