Mother Sentenced for Killing Adopted Daughter
A mother from Washington has been sentenced to over 30 years in prison for the tragic death of her 8-year-old adopted daughter. Mandy Miller, 36, received a 32-year sentence after pleading guilty in court to charges including murder by abuse and false imprisonment related to the death of her niece and daughter, Meera Miller.
Miller and her boyfriend, Alexander Kulmoyarov, were apprehended in South Dakota in December 2022. Authorities discovered that they had traveled from Washington to the Pine Ridge Native American Reservation with Meera’s body in a U-Haul trailer.
According to court documents, a funeral home alerted police when the couple arrived with a casket but lacked proper burial paperwork. They eventually confessed that a casket containing the girl was in the trailer.
Initially, they faced charges for not reporting a child’s death, but the case escalated to include second-degree murder, as stated by South Dakota prison officials.
During questioning, the two provided conflicting accounts. Kulmoyarov claimed that Meera died on Halloween, while Miller stated she passed away weeks earlier on September 10. Kulmoyarov later admitted he chose not to seek medical help or notify authorities because he wanted to spend more time with her and feared repercussions.
Investigators found that after enduring ongoing abuse, Meera had weakened significantly and died at their home in Washington in September 2022. Spokane County Deputy Prosecutor Emily Sullivan remarked at the sentencing that Miller “neglected, abused, and starved” the girl to death.
Details emerged about the abuse, with video evidence showing Meera being restrained and mistreated. Sullivan emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the facts of the case were undisputed: “They assaulted her, starved her, bound her, tortured her, and killed her.”
In a heartfelt statement during the sentencing, Meera’s biological mother, Andrea Miller, condemned her sister’s actions. She expressed profound grief, stating, “You murdered my third child, my beautiful daughter.” She even connected the child’s name to their late sister, who had served as a Marine.
Despite the tragedy, Andrea offered forgiveness, stating, “I forgive you, and Jesus Christ loves you.” She expressed hope that such neglect and abuse wouldn’t impact other children.
While prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 30 years in a plea agreement, Judge Rachel Anderson chose to impose a slightly harsher 32-year sentence. She remarked on the failure to protect the girl’s interests, adding, “This is the worst crime a person can commit against their child.”
Miller spoke about her own troubled upbringing but did not focus much on her actions. “My daughter did not deserve any abuse or neglect from me,” she said. After pleading guilty to charges, Kulmoyarov also accepted a plea deal and is due to be sentenced soon.
