Mom killed on highway while retrieving spilled luggage from family car

An Alabama woman who was on a girls' trip with family and friends was killed when she was struck by a car while trying to retrieve luggage that fell from a truck.

Police said the victim, Elizabeth Ann Atkinson, 47, was with her two daughters, two friends and a truck when a package fell off the vehicle on Highway 181 near Rigsby Road in Daphne early Tuesday morning. I was moving.

Daphne, a city in Baldwin County, is located approximately 24 miles southeast of Mobile, Alabama.

According to FOX 10, Atkinson was killed just before 6:30 a.m. when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle while picking up some belongings that had been spilled on the road.

“We believe the back hatch of the truck opened and some of the cargo fell out and opened onto the highway,” Capt. Reginald Aldis of the Daphne Police Department said, according to Fox 10.

Aldis said the victim and another family member stopped and tried to pick up scattered clothing on foot.

“At some point during that time, she was hit by another vehicle,” Aldis said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not clear what type of vehicle Atkinson was in or what type of vehicle caused her to crash.

Aldis said the driver of the second car was returning home from work and was not speeding.

“The driver left…he had just finished a night shift nearby and was headed north on Highway 181 toward his home,” Aldis said, Fox 10 reported.

Officers were already on their way to the scene of the accident just before 6:20 a.m. after receiving reports that a woman was picking up clothes on the road. A few minutes later, police said they received another call about a person being hit on the highway.

Investigators said Atkinson had just left home with her two daughters and two of their friends for a girls' trip when the tragedy occurred.

Investigators said the vehicle that hit Atkinson was traveling within the speed limit after reviewing the vehicle's event data recorder, USA Today reported. They also ruled out alcohol playing a role in the incident.

Atkinson's two daughters on the trip were students at Bayside Academy on Mobile Bay's east coast, the Miami Herald reported.
