At the Paris Olympics on Monday, Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis not only won the gold medal in the pole vault final with a jump of 6.25 meters, but also set a world record with the feat.
As the Stade de France crowd roared and he was cheered on by his fellow competitors, the 24-year-old Duplantis barely cleared the 6.25-metre bar before sprinting off to kiss his girlfriend, Swedish model Desiree Englander.
Duplantis also hugged his Swedish teammates, even punching one of them in celebration.
At the end, Duplantis greeted his family waiting in the front row before flashing a Michael Jordan-esque shrug.
But that wasn’t his only important celebration.
Duplantis also imitated Turkey’s famous silver medalist shooter Yusuf Dikets, who competed with minimal protective gear and performed in a way that suggested he had previous shooting experience.
Perhaps most impressively, the Lafayette, Louisiana native had already won gold on Monday with a 6.10-meter vault, but still had energy left and was willing to try even higher.
With this victory, Duplantis has won his second consecutive Olympic gold medal, following his win in Tokyo.
Duplantis’ new record just beat his previous best of 6.24 metres, set in April.
His win followed gold medals at the 2024 World Indoor Championships and the 2024 European Championships.
Duplantis played collegiately at Louisiana State University, winning the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championship with the Tigers.
The reason Duplantis is competing for Sweden instead of the United States is because her mother, Helena, is a former Swedish volleyball player and heptathlete.
Duplantis’ athleticism isn’t just something to be admired.
His older brother, Antoine, was a 12th-round pick by the Mets out of Louisiana State University in 2019 but hasn’t played in the minor leagues since 2022.
This otherworldly feat by a genius earned Sweden their third gold medal and eighth overall.
