Senate Republicans are pushing to amend federal rules regarding commercial driver’s licenses following a tragic accident in Florida that resulted in three fatalities. Senator Ashley Moody from Florida plans to propose legislation aimed at addressing issues related to illegal immigration and commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). The new measures would enhance English language proficiency requirements for obtaining a commercial license.
“For American truck drivers, the ability to read English road signs is crucial, not just an option… it’s part of the job,” Moody stated in a recent interview.
This proposed legislation comes in the wake of a serious incident where an illegal immigrant from India, identified as Harjinder Singh, allegedly caused a deadly crash while making an illegal U-turn on a Florida highway. Singh, who possessed a commercial driver’s license issued in California, has been charged with multiple counts of vehicle homicide and manslaughter.
While Florida allows some immigrants to acquire standard driver’s licenses without citizenship documentation, obtaining a CDL typically requires proof of legal residency or employment authorization under federal regulations.
Moody’s bill aims to ensure that commercial licenses are issued only to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or individuals with valid work visas. Additionally, it intends to reinforce state requirements for maintaining English proficiency, aligning with an executive order from earlier this year.
Reports indicate that Singh had previously failed both English and road sign tests. If states do not enforce these proficiency requirements, they risk losing eligibility for federal funding, raising concerns about road safety.
Ensuring safety on our roads is, I think, paramount. It’s a complex issue that needs careful thought and action.
