Mookie Betts on Being a Player, Not a Political Figure

Mookie Betts, the star of the Los Angeles Dodgers, emphasizes his desire to be recognized as a baseball player rather than a tool for political agendas.

The 33-year-old athlete visited the White House after the Dodgers clinched the World Series in 2024, but he won’t be attending again this year. Betts clarified that his choice isn’t influenced by politics; he simply wants to spend time with his new baby.

The American League MVP expressed confusion over why athletes are viewed as political figures today.

“Honestly, I don’t get why people see athletes as politicians or change-makers. We just play our games,” he shared in an interview.

Betts reflected on the pressures athletes face about visiting the White House, stressing that whatever decision they make, someone will likely be displeased.

“It’s a tricky spot for us,” he explained. “You can’t win; if you do, there’s backlash, and if you don’t, there’s still criticism.” He further noted, “Sometimes, you’ve got to look out for your own happiness first.” Afterall, making his family happy is his priority.

The eight-time All-Star also mentioned that he doesn’t let outside opinions bother him too much. “If I have to upset some people, at least I know I’m doing what’s best for me and my family,” Betts said.

As he continues his 13th season in the league, Betts has had a challenging year statistically, with a career average of .288 now reflecting only .235 this season. Despite this, he remains determined to lead the Dodgers toward another World Series victory.
