More Americans say Trump overstepping his power than judges: Survey

A recent survey indicates that many Americans feel President Trump is overstating his presidential authority and rushing his goals, especially in contrast to judges who have challenged his administration’s decisions, according to a study released on Friday.

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 54% of adults in the U.S. believe the president holds too much power. Around 35% think his power is just right, while only 9% feel he has too little.

Opinions about federal judges were more mixed. About 32% of respondents felt judges wield too much authority, but 43% believed they have an appropriate amount of power, and roughly 23% said they don’t have enough.

Among Republicans, 52% expressed concern over excessive federal judicial power, while nearly 38% thought judges have the right amount. A small 9% felt they have too little power.

Since taking office, Trump has signed numerous executive orders, pushed law firms for advantageous agreements, and made strides to secure the southern border while deporting immigrants.

However, the courts have often intervened against his administration’s actions, prompting the president to call for action against his opponents.

A Marquette University Law School poll found that 70% of Americans disapproved of Trump’s control over agency decisions regarding closures and budget cuts.

In the latest survey, 57% of respondents stated they think Trump has overstepped in his use of presidential power. About 32% said his power usage is appropriate, while 10% felt he hasn’t utilized enough.

Almost all Democrats surveyed—86%—believe Trump has gone too far, while 62% of Republicans think he’s using the right amount of power.

The polling involved 1,260 U.S. adults conducted between April 17 and April 21, with a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.
